I have happily been doing OCR since 2013. I was an athlete my entire life including being a collegiate volleyball player. My career was cut short however due to the intensity of grad school as I found myself in a classroom for what seemed like all hours of every day. I definitely lost my athletic edge from not having something to “train” for anymore, and unfortunately, all of the “out of shape” qualities followed closely behind. I was at my heaviest, lowest muscle mass, you name it.
My roommate and I decided we were going to NOT let grad school get the best of our physical well being, so we set a goal: complete the 60 day ever infamous INSANITY program from BeachBody followed by running a Tough Mudder. At that point in my life I was extremely naïve to OCR and the work that goes into being a successful athlete in the sport. In all fairness, I just wanted to finish the run in one piece. Tough Mudder seemed like the ultimate challenge: distance running plus obstacles requiring incredible strength.
I never considered myself a runner and I always lacked upper body strength from a shoulder injury. I was always involved in “team” sports so the thought of running with friends and supporting others on course was very appealing to me. We finished the race and it was hands down one of the hardest things I had ever done. I was definitely out of my element but I couldn’t get over the high after crossing the finish line realing what I had just accomplished. I was addicted at that point. I loved the supportive atmosphere, camaraderie amongst strangers, watching people push themselves past their own personal limits; it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I continued to research more OCR events and found myself signing up for any and all possible.
Fast forward to now, I have finally reached the point to be more competitive in the sport and wanting to take myself to the next level. I know I’m capable of pushing myself even harder but that takes very specific training and of course, time. I work a swing shift life in an emergency room as a physician assistant. Time is NOT on my side. Insert Race Ready Obstacles, here to save the day! RRO has given me the upper hand in training to truly be ready for race day. Their grips and rig pieces are of amazing quality and durability. They are convenient, portable and truly time/cost effective. Their pieces are extremely close to actual race day obstacles, if not harder. If I can complete an RRO rig, I can complete a rig on the race course. They helped me take down my newest archenemy, Anchor’s Away, (easily might I add) and I’m on my way to mastering Battering Bird (hello twirly beards)!
It is definitely hard to pick a favorite piece but because of my initial very HATE-HATE relationship with Anchor’s Away, RRO’s anchors set wins. For reference, when I first bought the set I couldn’t make it past the first anchor. But, with persistence and once again the convenience of having these anchors readily available, I flew through them on the Savage course this year.
If anyone is out there looking to improve their race day performance, I highly advise you browse through what RRO has to offer. They disallow you from having any more excuses of why you can’t get over an obstacle. You know that frustration you face on race day when an obstacle is just kicking your butt? NO MORE. These items are made for anyone, anywhere and from any lifestyle.
OCR is about challenging yourself. Being the best version of yourself. Why not take it up a notch?
Happy Training! Stay healthy, stay fit, stay savage ;)
